Frequently Asked Questions

1. There are many local tutoring centers, teachers who tutor, and virtual tutoring options available to families. Why choose TR Tutoring Solutions?

One-on-one tutoring will absolutely yield positive results, but the expertise of the educator leading that instruction makes all the difference in efficiency and effectiveness of those results.

TR Tutoring Solutions is personally run by certified teachers with extensive advanced credentials across both education and content areas, including:

  • M.A. in Teaching

  • M.A. in Literature & Writing

  • M.A. in Library & Information Science

  • M.Ed. in Advanced Studies (Online Teaching & Curriculum Design)

  • B.S. in Mathematics

  • B.A. in Psychology

  • Minors in English and Science

  • Gifted & Talented Certification

  • American Montessori Society Secondary Certification

  • Read to Succeed Endorsement

  • IBM Data Science Certification (2024)

  • State teaching certifications spanning Early Childhood through High School

We have extensive experience in public schools, private schools, virtual programs, and homeschooling. These environments and educational choices operate differently — and families deserve educators who understand those differences at a professional level.

It’s also important to understand what “certified tutor” means. Many tutoring centers create their own internal training programs or follow a company training program and label staff as “certified.” That is not the same as holding state teaching certifications or multiple graduate degrees in both education and subject matter expertise.

We intentionally remain small and do not hire additional tutors. Why? Because quality matters. Personalization matters. Excellence matters. We refuse to dilute our standards.

This is not a side hustle. This is our profession and our calling. We’ve dedicated our careers to building TR Tutoring Solutions with intention — and we use the same methods and academic standards with our own children.

Tutoring and private teaching is an investment. If you’re going to invest in one-on-one instruction, you deserve top-tier educators who maximize every session and deliver meaningful, lasting academic growth.

At TR Tutoring Solutions, education isn’t just what we do — it’s who we are.

2. Why 30-minute sessions? Other tutoring centers and tutors recommend 60 minutes or more. Isn’t 30 minutes too short?

For some students, 45–60 minutes absolutely makes sense — particularly middle and high school students who need homework support, test prep, or homeschool students who use us as private teachers for subject outsourcing.

However, for most tutoring needs, 30 minutes is the key to our success.

Research in cognitive science consistently shows that students — especially early childhood, elementary, and middle school learners — experience peak focus in concentrated learning bursts of approximately 20–30 minutes. After that point, attention declines, retention decreases, and productivity drops.

We would rather deliver 30 minutes of fully engaged, targeted, high-impact instruction than stretch into 60 minutes where focus fades and time becomes less effective.

Reading and math require intense mental stamina — especially for students who are below grade level or for academically advance students who are working above grade level. For these learners, 30 minutes of focused cognitive effort is not only significant, but it's critical to effective acceleration. Pushing beyond their natural focus window often leads to frustration, fatigue, and diminished returns.

Our model is built around:

  • Targeted instruction

  • Clear objectives

  • Immediate feedback

  • Acceleration — not time filling

We do not spend 15–20 minutes on unrelated games or busy work to extend a session. You are not paying for us to fill time. You are paying for expert teaching — delivered efficiently and effectively.

There is also an important psychological component. We intentionally structure sessions so students leave feeling successful. Ending on a strong, confident note creates a positive association between tutoring and achievement. That positive association builds confidence — and confidence accelerates learning.

This balance of cognitive science, instructional efficiency, and educational psychology is a major reason our students grow quickly.

In short:
It’s not about how long a student sits at a table.
It’s about how much meaningful learning happens while they’re there.

3. Are you Orton-Gillingham (OG) trained?

At TR Tutoring Solutions, we are often asked about Orton-Gillingham (OG) training due to its growing popularity in reading instruction.

While we are not formally certified in Orton-Gillingham, our instruction is deeply rooted in the same research-based principles that make the approach so effective. We utilize an OG-based curriculum and incorporate many of its key strategies, particularly its strong emphasis on phonics, blending, and segmenting—foundational skills that are essential for all readers.

It’s important to understand that Orton-Gillingham was originally developed to support students with dyslexia and other language-based learning differences. As a result, it is intentionally designed with a high level of structure, repetition, and scaffolding. This level of support is incredibly valuable for students who need it.

However, most students do not require that degree of intensity and scaffolding.

Our philosophy is to meet each student exactly where they are. We are intentional about not over-scaffolding instruction when it isn’t necessary. Providing more support than a student needs can slow down progress and make it more difficult for them to develop independence as a reader. Instead, we begin with the appropriate level of guidance and strategically add support as needed—allowing students to build confidence, think critically, and accelerate more efficiently.

A helpful way to think about this is: it is always easier to add support than it is to remove it once a student becomes reliant on it.

For students who do require more intensive, highly scaffolded instruction, we absolutely implement our full OG-based curriculum to support their growth—without the significantly higher cost often associated with fully certified OG programs and educators.

Ultimately, our goal is simple: to provide expert, individualized reading instruction that is both effective and appropriate for each learner—ensuring strong, lasting literacy development without unnecessary barriers.

4. TR Tutoring Solutions offers both in person and virtual session options. However, is virtual learning as effective as in-person tutoring?

It absolutely can be — when it’s led by knowledgeable, experienced educators who understand how to teach effectively in a virtual environment.

Virtual instruction is not simply “doing the same thing on a screen.” It requires intentional structure, strong pacing, engagement strategies, and the right tools. We hold advanced training in online teaching and curriculum design and have extensive experience teaching virtually across multiple grade levels — including students as young as three years old.

Over the years, we have invested in high-quality digital programs, interactive resources, and research-backed tools that align with our instructional standards. Our virtual sessions are structured, engaging, and highly targeted — not passive screen time.

For many families, virtual tutoring offers convenience without sacrificing quality. It eliminates commute time, allows for scheduling flexibility, and keeps learning consistent even during travel or busy seasons.

That said, we are always honest with families. If we believe a student would benefit more from in-person instruction, we will say so. Our priority is effectiveness — not convenience. We will always communicate any observations we have that impact effective learning for the student.

We also remain flexible. Many families move between virtual and in-person sessions as schedules change, and we make that transition seamless.

Ultimately, effectiveness doesn’t depend on the format. It depends on the educator.

And our commitment to excellence remains the same — whether we’re sitting across the table or across the screen.

5. How do we schedule sessions? What is the best way to reach you?

All communication and scheduling is handled directly by me, Kaitlin Torres. I value staying personally connected with our families, and I’m happy to help with scheduling questions, availability, or general inquiries.

The best way to reach us is by text message or email, as those methods allow for the quickest and most reliable response.

If you choose to leave a voicemail, please follow up with a text or email. Occasionally, voicemails do not come through in a timely manner, and I never want to miss your message.

We do our best to accommodate scheduling needs while also honoring the consistency of our current families. When cancellations occur, we often offer those openings to students on our waitlist so we can serve as many families as possible while still maintaining loyalty and flexibility for those who have been with us long term.

We truly value clear communication and strive to make the scheduling process smooth and straightforward for every family.
